Polk audio 4shot headset By Laura Flaherty

With 40 years of supplying home audio products under their belt, Polk Audio's first toe-dip into the world of gaming comes in the shape of the 4shot headset, designed for the Xbox one console. Given the aforementioned experience, there were high hopes for the headsets performance. Unfortunately, these hopes weren't met.

Costing a total of $159.99, there are far more expensive than the 4shot on the market, but this price is still far above the quality that the 4shot offers. The flimsy plastic casing is nearly saved by the fresh, unique design, a nice break from the simple black and white we have learned to expect from the Xbox consoles. One of the most irksome points of the headset is the swivelling mounts around the ear cups, which pose the question of the headsets integrity. I doubt it would survive much pressure, or even a light fall. The headset gives a weak impression of a cheap pair of headphones that would be found in any €2 shop.

Despite these faults, the 4shot also has its good points. The around the ear cup padding is noise isolating, allowing for game focus. The same material is extended to the headband, allowing for comfort during online gaming marathons. This breathable material prevents the usual discomfort on the ear. The cable is also adaptable, so it can be used for smartphones, and is even compatible with the Ps4's dual shock system.

The headset microphone extends below the left ear cup, and can be hidden if the headset is being used simply as headphones. This, however practical, results in reduced microphone ability, causing voice muffling which makes it hard for other users to understand what is being said over online gaming.

While the sound and equalisation of the 4shot headset is superb, the bass can be muffled, and the high pitched noises can be extremely sharp. This is especially wearing during first person shooting games, and prolonged use can be harsh on the ears. I would not recommend it for gaming marathons.

In short, Polk Audio's first venture into the gaming world is far under par. The stylish design is entirely undermined by the headsets poor quality, and I would not recommend it for gamer use, especially considering the price.
